Embarking on the journey

Embarking on the journey to become a constable with the Akwesasne Mohawk Police Service is a rewarding and challenging endeavor. Our constable application process is designed to be comprehensive and rigorous, seeking out individuals who are not only qualified but also deeply committed to our mission of ensuring the safety and well-being of the Akwesasne community. This process includes several stages, from initial application screening to assessments, structured interviews, background checks, and security clearance. Aspiring constables who successfully navigate these stages will receive a conditional job offer, marking the beginning of their fulfilling career in law enforcement with our esteemed organization.

Please note that the selection process for the role of Police Constable is highly competitive, and applicants may be declined at any stage of the process.

Information Session

An informational session will be held for all applicants.  This session will identify the recruitment and selection process used for the hiring of a Constable.  It will be scheduled after the Deadline for the job posting and before the screening of applicants.

Fitness Testing

After the Physical Fitness Test, the results will be reviewed to determine whether to

Allow the applicant to continue in the hiring process or to end the process.  Candidates must achieve a minimum score of 60% to be eligible to proceed in the hiring process.

Interview

Questions will be based on jurisdiction, culture, community, applicant’s personal life and background experiences.  Candidates must achieve a minimum score of 70% to be eligible to proceed in the stage of the hiring process.

Written Assessment

Candidates are tested on their ability to organize information in a clear, coherent and comprehensive manner.  Candidates must achieve a minimum score of 70% to be eligible to proceed in the hiring process.

Psychological Assessment

Psychological testing takes place in Gatineau, Quebec. The assessment shall determine if the applicant is suitable for the constable position.  Testing is paid for by AMPS.  Travel, parking and meals are at the candidate’s own expense.  Appointments will be made by request of AMPS.

Background Check

The information on the application supplied by the candidate is verified by interviewing friends, family members, former employers, High school records, driver’s license and credit bureau checks.

Applicant & Employer Review

The applicant is advised at this time if they are successful in the process and offered a position of Cadet/Constable (experienced).

Technical Training

The successful candidate is registered to attend a 13-week technical training course through the Ontario Police College in Aylmer, Ontario and an additional 8 weeks at the Ontario Provincial Police Academy in Orillia, Ontario. The candidate will also attend Nicolet, Quebec to complete equivalence testing at the ENPQ.

Practical Training

After successful completion of the technical training, the candidate will undergo one year of on-the-job training  (also referred to as the probationary period). New constables will be assigned to ride-a-long with a experienced coach officer.

Policing Opportunities

AMPS Constable

The role provides the successful candidate with the chance to undergo basic constable training at the Ontario Police College as a Cadet, equipping them for a fulfilling career in law enforcement. After successfully obtaining a certificate from the Ontario Police College (OPC), the recruit will be appointed as a 4th Constable within the Akwesasne Mohawk Police Service. This appointment is subject to the conditions outlined in their officer appointment letter, including a probationary period.
